Robert Newbury Seal was born in Worcestershire on 25 October 1922. He served with the Royal Wiltshire Yeomary, part of the Royal Armoured Corps, in WWII and was Wounded in Action in Italy on 20 June 1944. He was discharged from the army on 17 May 1945. The Tewkesbury Register of 15 July 1944 carried an article which read thus:-
"Trooper R.N. Seal Wounded - Mr and Mrs George H Seal of 67 Windsor Road, Evesham, have received a letter from their son, Trooper Robert Newbury Seal, that he has been wounded and is at present in a military hospital, but no official communication has yet come to hand from the War Office.
He joined up in November 1941 and before enlisting was employed in the clerical department of the Great western Railway Company. He is aged 21 and was educated at Droitwich, and subsequently attended the Worcester Grammar School. After going overseas he took part in the fighting at El Alamein."
At around the time he was wounded the regiment had, between May–June 1944, taken part in the advance on Rome, working its way up in close country between the central mountains and the sea to the west. At one point, the 78th Division withdrew, but outlying elements of the regiment did not get the message and continued forwards. The Corps HQ diary for 23 June records 'RWY water truck reports Vaiano clear of enemy'
According to the 1939 Register he was a Clerk at a Fruit and Vegetable Merchants, whilst living at 67 Windsor Road, Evesham - the same address his WWII medals were posted to on 17 September 1948
Seal died in Cheltenham in 2005.
