Charles Evans was already 36 years old when WWI started in 1914. Born in Droylsden in 1879 he served with the 10th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, going to France on 22.7.1915. He was Killed in Action there on 18.9.1916 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

The Manchester Evening News of 11 October 1916 carried the following brief insert: 

"DROYLSDEN - Rifleman CHARLES EVANS (38), of the Rifle Brigade, one of five brothers fighting, has been killed. He was formerly employed at the Lumb Mill, and his wife and five children live at 8 Square Fold, Droylsden."
