286 TPR: J.O.GARLAND. KITCHENER'S F.S. Garland was born in 1872 seeing service with the Utrecht/Vryheid Military Police, a small unit on the Natal/Transvaal border created to ensure the Boers didn't re-enter Natal unobserved and unchallenged. He served with them as a Corporal, number 40, from 16.2.1901 until 1.7.1901 whereafter he enlisted with the 2nd Kitchener's Fighting Scouts. Enlisting in Durban on 20.7.1901. He was discharged in Pretoria on 20.7.1901. On attestation he was described as being 29 years old, British, and a Rail Roader by occupation. He had a ruddy complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. His next-of-kin was his sister, Mrs Mary Kelly of 4110 Wentworth, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.
