John James Thornhill was born in Swansea in 1879. He enlisted into the 1st battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers in October 1897 and saw service in the Anglo Boer War where his battalion saw much fighting in the run-up to the Relief of Ladysmith on 28 February 1900. They were particularly active in the Vaal Krantz effort in February 1900 where Buller was making his third and ultimately successful effort to enter the besieged town.

Thornhill was invalided home in May 1900, shortly after operations around the immediate vicinity of Ladysmith had ceased and was discharged as Medically Unfit on 22 January 1901.
