Instituted in 1993 as part of the restructuring of the honours system designed to remove distinction between ranks. The Royal Warrant, dated 7th February 1995 does not appear to have been published in the London Gazette.
This cross replaced all previous level two awards for gallantry in action, namely CGM, CGM (Flying), DCM and the DSO (when this was awarded for gallantry).
To March 2014, 58 awards have been made including one collective award to the Royal Irish Regiment/UDR and two posthumous awards.
