James Kelly was born in Birmingham on 4 April 1894. He attested for service with A Coy, 8th Bn Yorkshire Regiment and was mustered as a Bandsman. He was sent to France on 5.10.1914 and, three weeks later, on 4 November 1914, he was admitted to No. 6 Ambulance Train with a Strained Foot. Recovering from this injury he was posted back to the field where, at Loos on 25.9.1915 he was taken POW being sent to a POW Camp at Hameln in Prussia. He was released after the cessation of hostilities.
He enlisted with the Army Catering Corps for service in WWII and was awarded the Defence and War Medal 1939-45 which were sent to him at 33 Elliston Avenue, Great Barr, Birmingham on 1 July 1948.
He was awarded the Efficiency Medal in 1946
