John William Johnson was born on 18 January 1920. Having previous service in Palestine, he was already in uniform when WWII erupted. He served with the 7th Bn South Staffordshire Regiment and was Killed in Action on 8 July 1944 - the opening day of operation Charnwood.
On July 8, 1944, elements of the South Staffordshire Regiment fought in Operation Charnwood, the British assault on Caen during the Battle of Normandy, resulting in heavy casualties. The 59th (Staffordshire) Division, to which the 5th, 1/6th, 2/6th, and 7th battalions belonged, suffered over 1,000 casualties during this fierce fighting for the city. Johnson was one of the many who gave his life that day.
His medals were sent to his next of kin, Mrs O.K. McCourt (Daughter) at 97 Granville Road, Killycomain, Portadown, Northern Ireland on 29 October 1948.
According to the 1939 Register he was living at 390 Lordship Teynton Terrace, Teynton, Tottenham and was employed as a Press Stamp Operator.
