Rowland George Hills was born in 1913 and lived in the Poplar district of London's East End.
According to the 1939 Register, Hills was living at 246 Fire Station Brunswick Road, Poplar, Tower Hamlets where he was employed as a Watch Room Attendant at the Fire Station. He served with the London Fire Brigade during the WWII Blitz - where large parts of London were set ablaze by Incendiary Bombs dropped on the city. It was a very dangerous time for both the civilian population as well as for those, like Hills, required to douse the flames and save lives. He was awarded the London Fire Brigade LSGCM in 1954.
He died in Greenwich in 1974.
