John William Bull was born in 1906 Enlisted 5th Bn Beds & Herts R 8.8.1926. Served with his regiment in Palestine in 1936. He was Court Martialled at Norwich on 19 July 1940 for "Violence to Superiors." Pleading Not Guilty he was sentenced to 42 days detention 1940.
Having sailed for the Far East with his regiment he was taken POW with the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and held captive by the Japanese at a number of different camps and locations including Changi, Chungkai, Tuckanod and Nackenna over the period of his incarceration. According to his Japanese POW card he was mustered as a Driver and provided his address as 97A Wellington Street, Gravesend, Kent.
Having been released on 2 September 1945, after the Japanese surrender, he was repatriated to the UK where he completed a POW Questionnaire. His medals were sent to him on 5 July 1948 to 24 Clarence Street, Gravesend, Kent.
He was employed by Imperial Paper Mills until his retirement in 1971.
