Albert Belk was born in Nottingham in 1910. He served on the North West Frontier in 1935 with the 2nd battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment and transferred to the 7th Bn Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in WWII when sent to France with the BEF. He was taken POW in the Battle of France in May 1940 and was held at Stalag XXA Thorn. According to the 1939 Register he was living at 42 Bengal Street, Bradford and was a Private, no. 461006 with the Duke of Wellington's Regiment.

The Duke of Wellington's Regiment was part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France during World War II, and played a key role in the retreat from Dunkirk in 1940. The 1st Battalion was deployed to France at the start of the war, and was part of the rearguard at Dunkirk, covering the evacuation of the BEF.

He died in Bradford in 1974
