Victor John James Garrett was born in Aberdeen on 5 July 1887. He enlisted as a 14 year old school boy with the R.M.L.I at Gosport on 27 September 1901 and was a Boy Bugler aboard HMS Drake with effect from 13 January 1913.
He served aboard HMS King George V at the Battle of Jutland and was aboard Drake when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-Boat UC49 in the Bristol Channel on 14 June 1918, 16 men were killed but Garrett was one of those who survived. He was posted back to Portsmouth for survivor's leave.
According to the 1939 Register he was unmarried and living at 15 St Swithin's Terrace in Lewes. He was described as a Retired Royal Marines Company Sergeant Major.
He served in WWII - his papers do not show any time on the Depot Establishment but on 6 July 1940 he was posted to the Forward Base at Newhaven, Sussex on 13 July 1940. He was stationed there until 22 June 1942 whereafter he was posted back to Portsmouth UNTIL 13 December 1944. He was then placed on the Retired List on 31 January 1945 at which point his address was 15 Cleve Terrace, Lewes, Sussex. He was awarded the MSM in the London Gazette 28 February 1951
He passed away on 23 September 1965
