Ambler was born in Durban on 6 May 1899 but had moved to 61 Market Street, Boksburg by the time the war commenced. He was an 18 1/2 year old Grocer when he completed his attestation papers at Germiston on 4 December 1917 and was part of a draft of new men sent over to bolster the South African Division whose numbers had been decimated by the incessant fighting and heavy losses. He was in France from 18 August 1918 until 13 March 1919 before taking his discharge with a view to re-enlisting on 21 May 1919.
