Edward McLeod served with the 4th Royal Horse Artillery in the Western Desert and was Wounded in Action on 25 November 1941 during Operation Crusader.
In November 1941, during Operation Crusader, the 4th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) was active in the Western Desert, with its constituent batteries, notably F (Sphinx) Battery, engaged in heavy fighting around the Battle of Sidi Rezegh and the approach to Tobruk. F (Sphinx) Battery was involved in the movement towards the Sidi Rezegh aerodrome and experienced intense combat after being woken before dawn on November 20th to an attack. The regiment was equipped with 25-pounder guns and played a crucial role in the broader British Eighth Army offensive against Axis forces in North Africa.
His WWII medals were posted to him c/o HQ Field Records, B.A.O.R.I., on 4 February 1953.
His Long Service Medal was awarded on 7 March 1953 in the rank of Bombardier - one of the earliest of HM Queen Elizabeth's reign.
