Albert Edward Norie was born in Eccleshall Bierlow, Yorkshire 28 February 1919. According to the 1939 Register he was a Table Knife Cutter living at 30 Cat Lane, Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding
Having attested with the 5th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) for service in WWII, he was deployed to North Africa/Middle East. He was Killed in Action in the Battle of Gazala on 31 May 1942. He was 23 years old.
On the day he died, May 31, 1942, the 5th Battalion, Green Howards, was heavily engaged in defensive fighting in an isolated "box" position in the Gazala Line, North Africa, as part of the 150th Infantry Brigade. They were being encircled and cut off by Rommel's forces during the Battle of Gazala. The very next day, 1 June 1942, their ammunition expended, his battalion was overrun by Rommel with most of his comrades being taken prisoner as Rommel wound his way to Tobruk.
