Albert Edward Townsend was born in Blaenclydad, Glamorgan in 1917. He enlisted with the Royal Marines on 15 April 1940 and served with 5 Royal Marine Anti Aircraft Brigade. He was promoted Lance Corporal in 1945.
The 5th Royal Marine Anti-Aircraft (AA) Brigade was a World War II formation that operated in North West Europe from August 1944 to May 1945, engaging German forces in the South Beveland isthmus, conducting V-1 flying bomb defense, and defending the approaches to Antwerp. The brigade included A' Battery, C' Battery, and D' Battery.
According to the 1939 Register he was a Presser (Dyers and Cleaners) living with his parents at 97 Park Road, Worthing. He passed away in Worthing on 19 November 2013.
