1939-45 Star; Defence Medal; War Medal 1939-45 with ribbon bar M.I.D. Oakleaf - unnamed as awarded in original box of issue addressed to Mr W. Winslade 12 Conway Street, Attercliffe, Sheffield.
In a Most Secret interview conducted with Winslade by M.I.9. on 27 October 1941 he revealed that:
"I was captured near ROUEN on 9 June (1940) by German tanks. Our anti-tank gun was knocked out. I was marched through ST. POL to AUCHEL where I fell out and made for the coast. I think this was on June 16. There seemed no chance of crossing the CHANNEL and I decided to make for SPAIN. I walked to TOURS, sleeping in woods and fields and crossed the demarcation line unaided in August at BLERE. I was arrested for a few hours later by a gendarme and taken to CHATEAUROUX.
I was sent to FORT ST. JEAN and removed to ST. HIPPOLYTE about the beginning of November. I escaped on 6 August 1941 through the window of the dining-hall in which a bar had been sawn. I was taken in hand by the organisation and directed first to NIMES, then to BANYULS. We were guided across the mountains in a party of seven. I was arrested in GERONA, where lack of food made me give up. I was imprisoned for a time in FIGUERAS and then in MIRANDA. I was released in the middle of October and taken to Gibraltar.
I should like to pay tribute to the helpfulness of S/Ldr. Whitney STRAIGHT at ST. HIPPLOYTE."
Winslade arrived back in the UK (Greenock) on 26 October 1941 and was Mentioned in Dispatches for recognition of distinguished service in the field in the London Gazette of 12 February 1942.
