Charles Edward Cooper Leading Telegraphist, Royal Navy was born in Bungay, Suffolk in 1920. He enlisted as a Boy in 1935 and had a busy WWII, serving in the Malta Convoys among others.
He was posted to HMS Nigeria on 3 September 1940 taking part in Atlantic Convoys. He then had a brief spell aboard HMS Spartiate before returning to Nigeria on 6 May 1941 for deployment with the Home Fleet. On 11 March 1942 he took passage to HMS Pembroke and from there joined the Royal Navy Signals School on 23 July whereafter he was made Acting Leading Telegrapher.
On 5 January 1943 he was posted to HMS Tay deployed on Atlantic Convoy duties, joining HMS Duncan on 11 April 1943. For a few days he was aboard HMS Vidette which was working on Gibraltar Convoy Defence whereafter he returned to HMS Duncan. After a merry go round of ships he joined HMS Mary Rose on 26 September 1944 remaining with her until 31 October 1946 by which time the war was over. He officially retired on 18 May 1950.
He was awarded the Malta George Cross 50th Anniversary Commemorative medal in 1992 which unfortunately does not accompany the group, but a copy medal does.
