John Dolaghan was born in 1909 He enlisted with the RAMC in Glasgow in 1934 and served with No 1 Field Ambulance with the 1st Army in North Africa and Italy. He was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major and was MID in the LG of 29.11.1945. He was awarded the 1953 Coronation Medal as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class with the RAMC. He was a qualified Nursing Orderly. 

According to his service book he saw service in France from 20.9.1939 until 1 June 1940, possibly one of those evacuated from Dunkirk. He was in Africa from 10 November 1942 until 30 January 1944 whereafter he was posted to Italy on 1 February 1944 until 27 May 1947. He was discharged at Birmingham in 1956.

His OC of 14 Field Ambulance wrote the following iro Dolaghan from Italy on 20.1. 1947: "I have served with this W.O. for the past 6 years. During my Army Career, I have never met a more efficient, capable, trustworthy and truly excellent Regimental Sgt Major. R.S.M. Dolaghan has proved himself time and again both during the war and in the post-war period be be the epitome of a really good RSM. No task has ever proved too tedious for him, and no job has ever proved too difficult. He is a first rate organiser and administrator, pays attention to detail and in my opinion is an excellent example of the best type of British Army NCO."
