A School Teacher by occupation, Robert Freick was born in Dipton, Durham in 1910 He enlisted for service in WWII on 17.10.1940, with the Recce Corps/4th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and was posted to the Middle East on 22.8.1941. He was transferred to the Army Educational Corps on 14.10.1943 and was transferred to the Reserve on 16.12.1945
50th Recce, with whom Freick originally served, was wiped out at the battle of Gazala in May 1942 in a defensive infantry role and was never reformed.
His medals were posted to him on 10 March 1950 to 39 Jesmond Road, Haughton, Darlington, Durham.
According to the 1939 Register he was a School Teacher living at 18 West Avenue, Billingham, Durham
According to a newspaper report in the Newcastle Journal of 10 February 1962 he and his class of 30 pupils had a narrow escape at Darlington when a lorry overturned and tipped its load of steel sheets among them.
He died in Durham in April 1983.
