Ralph Charnley RNVR was born in Preston Lancs in 1924. He served at the Fleet Air Arm base HMS Nightjar at Inskip Lancs attached to 738 Squadron. He died in a Motor Bike accident on 11.1.1946 and is buried at Wood Plumpton, St Ann's Churchyard.

A local newspaper on 12 January 1946 stated that, "Temp Sub-Lieutenant Ralph Charnley was killed yesterday afternoon when his motorcycle combination was in a collision with a cattle wagon at Wood Plumpton. He was stationed at R.N.A.S. Inskip and was travelling to his home at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. He was permitted to live at home and travel daily to his base (on compassionate grounds) as his mother was widowed not long before the incident of his death. A loving son true and kind his equal was hard to find. His only relative is a younger brother now residing in Spain. The owner of the cattle wagon was Mr Cooper."

Charnley was engaged to Mildred Maclese, Petty Officer, WRNS
