Charles Douglas Simpson MN was born in Forest Hill Northumberland in 1886. He served in the Merchant Navy in WWII and WWII and was the only casualty aboard SS Haytor sunk by mine in the North Sea - east of Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.

The SS Haytor was a cargo ship that was sunk by a mine on July 26, 1940, while traveling from London to Blyth. The 1,189 ton ship was carrying ballast at the time. On receipt of this news, five available Paddle Minesweepers were ordered from Lowestoft to make a searching sweep commencing at 0400 on 27th July, Captain M/S Harwich in HM Yacht Lexa conducting… Two mines were destroyed in addition to a ‘new type small mine’ salved and towed into Harwich by HMS Queen Empress.

There was one casualty when Haytor went down - Charles Simpson.
