Allan Leslie Povall was born in Durban, Natal on 16.10.1895. He served with the 3rd MR (Natal Mounted Rifles) in the 1914 Rebellion and in German South West Africa in 1915. He went on to serve with 4th South Africa Horse in German East Africa before moving to the RAF in July 1918 where he saw service in Egypt and was commissioned as a Temporary Lieutenant in July 1919.
In WWII he was commissioned as a Lieutenant with the Cape Corps (Cape Coloured Corps) seeing service in East and North Africa where he was promoted to Captain.
