Arthur Harold Doyle was born in 1913 in Claremont Cape Town. He had pre-war service with No. 2 Heavy Battery, Cape Garrison Artillery from 1 June 1929 until 30 June 1935 and when WWII started, served with SAAF Radio Signaling Company from 15 November 1939 until 9 September 1940 - at which point he attested for service on 10 September 1940 as a Wireless Operator with the South African Air Force and was posted with 14 Squadron to East Africa from March until April 1941 before moving on to 24 Squadron in Egypt where he served from May 1941 to January 1942. Whereafter he was repatriated to South Africa after incurring a compound fracture to his arm in an accident.
He was discharged on 4 March 1946 having spent the last few years at 23 Air School.
Doyle earned his Efficiency Medal with 14 years 318 days service - comfortably more than the 12 years required for the award of the medal which was sent to him on 9 May 1947.
