According to the 1939 Register he was, at age 14, an Aircraft Worker living at 22 Lexham Road, Liverpool. His father was a Police Constable.

Aged 39 he was promoted to Sergeant in 1964 and transferred from Prescot Street to Rose Hill, Liverpool. Marl was awarded his Police Long Service medal, for 22 years service and good conduct, by the Mayor of Liverpool at a ceremony on 3 February 1971.

He passed away in May 2002 in Flintshire West, Clwyd, Wales.
