Edgar Stephens was born in St. Day Cornwall in 1892. He enlisted with the Royal Navy on 3.5.1915 and served on a variety of vessels and establishments in WWI - including HMS Canopus, Skirmisher and Pelorus. He earned his LSGCM in 1930
On the outbreak of WWII he re-enlisted being based, primarily, at Lucifer a Shore Establishment on the east coast. He was released from service on 13.8.1945 and was awarded the BEM in the London Gazette 28/12/1945 Issue 37407 page 67.
A local newspaper ran the article: "Carharrack man gets B.E.M. - 'Mr Edgar Stephens, Newsham House, Carharrack, yesterday received intimation from the Admiralty that he had been awarded the British Empire Medal for devotion to duty. Mr Stephens served for 28 years in the Royal Navy attaining the rank of Chief E.R.A. He was recalled on the outbreak of war and remained in the Service until fighting ended. He has recently been elected hon. treasurer of Carharrack Horticultural and Fancier's Society."
Included with the medals are the original B.E.M. box of issued, the newspaper snippet above, the award slip for the WW2 medals, a small photo of the recipient and the letter from Buckingham Palace iro the award of the B.E.M.
