David Hannah was born in 1911. In 1927 he joined the schooner "Ianthe" as a Seaman later promoted to Mate. In April 1935 he joined the yacht "Belle Paule" as Master, serving with her until the outbreak of WWII in September 1939. He was commissioned into the RNVR  as a Temporary Sub-Lieutenant on 30.3.1941 and promoted to Lieutenant on 20.4.1941 and to Lt. Commander on 30.9.1945.

During his WWII service he was a Officer in Command of MMS.134 (Motor Mine Sweeper) from 21.3.1942 until 28.6.1944. During this period he was Mentioned in Dispatches for the Salerno Landings (LG 23.5.1944). On 22.11.1944 he took command of BYMS.2014 (Minesweeper) where he remained until 22.10.1945. He was then deployed to the Italian Navy as Liaison Officer with the Italian Minesweepers, leaving them 10.7.1947. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in the LG of 1.1,1946 for services in BYMS.2014

He later served with various civilian shipping lines and worked in various parts of the Mediterranean. He retired from the RNR on 2.2.1946.
