George Arthur Neilson was born in Walthamstow in 1892. He enlisted with the Royal Navy in 1911 and served the entire WWI aboard the newly launched Earl of Peterborough. Deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean he saw active service in the Dardanelles where his vessel shelled Turkish positions in early 1915, remaining there active against units in Egypt, Palestine and Turkey. He was awarded the DSM for Services in the Mediterranean Station in the LG 17.5.1918.

He continued to serve in the early 1930's and was, according to the 1939 Register, a Commission Writer with the Royal Navy living at 98a Napier Road, Gillingham, Kent. He died in Hastings, Sussex in 1962.
