Captain John Sandilands Royal Artillery and 8th Bn East Lancashire Regiment, MBE awarded 1931 as Librarian at Royal Artillery Institution Woolwich, Born Glasgow.

Having attested into the RA on 29 April 1884 Sandilands saw extensive service in India from 10 September 1896 until 20 November 1903 - earning the IGS with Punjab and Tirah clasps. His Long Service & Good Conduct medal was awarded to him in 1902. Although not a battle casualty, he dislocated his left elbow on 10 October 11894 whilst not on duty. 

With the outbreak of WWI he was commissioned Quarter-Master and Lieutenant in 1914, and served with the 8th (Service) Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, in France from August 1915. Having survived the war he was awarded the M.B.E on 6 January 1931 for his service as the Librarian of the Royal Artillery institute (Edinburgh Gazette January 6, 1931 page 21)

The Lewisham Borough News of March 5, 1941 carried the distressing news, "The sudden death of John Sandilands, aged 75, late of the Royal Artillery, of 27 Hill Reach, Woolwich which occurred whilst he was out for a walk on Saturday morning, was investigated by the Lewisham Coroner yesterday. Mr Sandilands was described as an active man. He had filled the role of Librarian at the Royal Artillery Institute. After collapsing in the street he was carried to Woolwich War Memorial Hospital. The casualty officer attributed the death to heart disease. Verdict: Death from natural causes."
