Albert Edwin Smart was born in Bristol in 1895. He served with the Royal Engineers in WWI, transferring to the Royal Signals at some stage after the war. He earned the LSGCM with the Royal Signals in 1934 and was awarded the MSM. He was a Warrant Officer Class II when he was awarded the 1937 Coronation Medal.
Entering WWII he was commissioned a Lieutenant/Quartermaster with the Royal Signals and was awarded the M.B.E. (LG 11 July 1940) whilst serving in that capacity. In 1947 he emigrated to Canada where he was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1956 in the rank of Major with the Royal Canadian Signals.
