Austin Lee was born in Harpurhey, Lancashire on 12 April 1887. He enlisted for service with 61 Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C. on 16 April 1915 and was posted to France on 23 November 1915. The 61st served with 20th (Light) Division on the Western Front.

He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field in the London Gazette of 12 December 1917, likely for the actions leading up to the German retreat to the Hindenburg line. He was demobilised on 12 June 1919 and returned home to 67 Gibson Street, Harpurhey, Manchester, the same address he was at when the 1939 Register was compiled. He spent his life working for the Manchester Corporation Tramways Department as a Conductor/Driver. 

He died on 11 September 1966 in Manchester
