Sydney Edward Main was born in Southsea in 1886. He joined the Royal Navy as an Engineer Cadet in 1902 and was commissioned and promoted Sub Lt in 1907. He was aboard one of the battleships during the 1911 Coronation and received the medal. He served with the 1st Battle Squadron in WWI and retired from the service in 1936, a year after he received the 1935 Jubilee Medal as an Engineer Commander, R.N., only to return in 1937. He served in WWII and died in 1981.

He was once described by a superior officer as follows, "Slight French.... I have not been impressed by his energy in administering departments such as one expects to find in senior engineers, especially one expecting selection for promotion shortly. Has tendency to place home attractions before best interests of the service. General capability not above average. Somewhat inclined to to overate importance and take offence."

According to the 1939 Register he was living at 11 Henstead Court, Southampton and was a RN Engineering Captain on HMS Victory.

Medals are in good condition unless otherwise indicated. Sold with research.
