Ernest Crowder was born in 1894 he enlisted with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps with no. 17026. He entered France on 13 August 1914 as one of the first men to cross over for that theatre after war was declared. He was awarded the DCM for his actions around Petite on 9/10 September 1916. 

The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal appeared in the London Gazette of 24 November 1916 and read thus:

"17026 Acting Sjt. E. Crowder, 2nd Coy., Machine Gun Corps. For conspicuous gallantry in action. He handled his machine guns with great courage and determination. He set a fine example to his men, thereby enabling them to hold out. (near Petit 9/10th September 1916.)"

Twice WIA with a GSW in April 1918 and another wounding in October, a month prior to the end of the war.
