Instituted in 1897 by the Khedive of Egypt to be given to all those who took part in the reconquest of Dongola province in the Sudan 1896-98 as well as subsequent operations in the southern provinces.
Crews of the Royal Naval ships HMS Melita and HMS Scout received this medal without clasps for the Dongola operations but were not awarded the Queens Sudan Medal.
The most commonly seen clasps are the Atbara and Khartoum which we have produced first, others will follow. 15 clasps were authorised in total.
The obverse of the medal translates as Abbas Himli the Second with the date 1314 (AD1897).
