This medal was sanctioned on 1st April 1895 and was originally awarded for a number of expeditions against African Chiefs and slave traders in the area around Lake Nyassa in British Central Africa/Nyasaland - today called Malawi, as well as three expeditions to Unyoro and Mruli in Uganda. The first two issues of the medal featured the swivelling ring suspension. A clasp was authorised 'CENTRAL AFRICA 1894-98' and those who already had the medal with ring suspesnion had their medals altered to take the straight bar and clasp, only 5 Europeans received just the clasp.
