Instituted in 1861 to mark service in the second China war of 1857-60. six clasps were issued and the medal, which was un-named to the royal Navy, can be found with engraved as well as impressed naming.
Initially a ribbon comprising five equal stripes of green, white, red, yellow and blue edged with red was authorised but subsequently changed to crimson with yellow edges.
