By General Order 4th January 1844, the award of bronze stars was sanctioned which were to be made from captured guns. Although officially called the Gwalior Stars, the two versions became know by their own name, marking the two battles of Maharajpoor and Punniar.
These battles were fought on the same day twenty miles apart and so it is therefore impossible for an individual to receive both.
Originally made with a hook to be worn on the uniform jacket the majority of recipients altered this to a wide range of suspension and used the ribbon used at the time for the other Indian war ribbons.
This example has the First Afghan War suspension.
