The most famous action of the campaign is probably the charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman in which a young Winston Churchill took part.
Usually seen awarded with the Khedive's Sudan medal: - Khedive's Sudan Medal Five Victoria Crosses were awarded for the campaign, Captain the Honourable (Alexander Gore Arkwright Hore-Ruthven (Later Earl of Gowrie), 3rd Highland Light Infantry; Paul Aloysius Kenna, 21st Lancers; Captain (Later Major General) Nevill Maskell Smyth, 2nd Dragoon Guards; Lieutenant (Later Captain) the Honourable Raymond Harvey Lodge Joseph De Montmorency, 21st Lancers; Private (Later Corporal) Thomas Byrne, 21st Lancers.
