Awarded to the Military General Service Medal 1799-1814.
Following the success at Ciudad Rodrigo, Wellington turned south to Badajoz which blocked his path into the West of Spain.
The fierce fighting for Badajoz ran from 16th March until 6th April 1812.
The cost was high, the besieged enemy garrison of 5,000 men lost 1200 killed or wounded.
The loss to the Allies was great; 77 officers and 963 men killed; 306 officers and 3,481 men wounded. It is said that when Wellington was told of this incredible loss he uncharacteristically burst into a flood of tears.
