At the moment of the evacuation of Benevente on 29th December 1808, General Desnouettes with 600 chasseurs a cheval of the of Imperial Guard forded the River Esla and drove back the videttes.
The British pickets advanced and repeatedly charged the enemy, Paget bought up 10 Hussars in support and the pickets dashed again at the French, however, before they could close with them the French wheeled round and fled to the ford, plunging into the river.
