Awarded to the Military General Service Medal 1799-1814. In the summer of 1810 Marshal Andre Massena marched his army into Portugal and Wellington withdrew his force back to the heights of Busaco situated 125 miles north-east of Lisbon, intending to block the French advance. The battle took place on 27th September 1810 and, following the defeat of the French, Wellington withdrew his force behind the Torres Vedras, which he had constructed between 1809-1810.
