Awarded to the Military General Service Medal 1799-1814 and the Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 . It was decided by the Government of Calcutta that, for strategic trading reasons, Java needed to be captured. Java was then the only settlement in the East Indies in the possession of the Batavian (Dutch) Republic. The Governor General of India, Lord Minto, organised the expedition which was commanded by Rear Admiral the Honourable Robert Stopford (Naval Forces) and Lt General Sir Samuel Auchmuty (Army). The force landed on 4th August 1811 at Chillinching, the command of the island was under the French General Jansens. The enemy were defeated on 26th August and one month later the Dutch ceded Java and other islands to the British.
