Following his defeat on the Nivelle, the French Marshal Soult was forced to defend his line of defence along the River Nive.
The battle commenced at 08.00 on 9th December 1813 and raged until 13th when the enemy was driven from its position and the French Marshal withdrew to his entrenched camp at Bayonne.
