Awarded to the Military General Service Medal 1799-1814. Following Napoleons disastrous loss against the Russians, he needed to rebuild his force so withdrew troops from the Peninsula. Wellington took advantage of this and marched from Portugal into Northern Spain, crossing the River Ebro, outflanking the French. On 21st June 1813 the French under Joseph Bonaparte faced Wellington's Army at Vittoria. Following his victory here Wellington was appointed Field Marshall in the British Army.
