Authorised by Army Order 71 of 1st April 1896. It was granted to the garrison at Chitral Fort commanded by Brevet Major C.V.F.Townsend CB which had been subject to a seige for seven weeks between 3rd March and 19th April 1895.
One Victoria Cross was awarded, Suregeon Captain Harry Frederick Whitchurch, Indian Medical Service.
