Established on 29th December 1922 This particular issue is the Civil Division and was awarded until 1933 when a laurel branch was added to the ribbon.
A total of 130 Empire Gallantry Medals were awarded, 64 Civil, 62 Military and 4 Honorary. Under the terms of the Royal Warrant instituting the George Cross holders of the EGM were to exchange their medal for a George Cross. There were exceptions, 4 EGMs were awarded posthumously and under the terms of the GC could not be exchanged, neither could the 4 Honorary awards to foreigners. In total 112 EGMs were exchanged, 8 were not eligible for exchange leaving 10 which were never exchanged.
The Royal Warrant included provision for a second award bar but none was ever awarded.
