Cookson is understood to have served with 16 Air Assault Brigade in Iraq. 16 Air Assault Brigade was heavily involved in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, deploying approximately 5,500 soldiers as part of Operation TELIC. The brigade's initial objective was to secure the Rumaila oil fields and they played a significant role in protecting Allied supply lines and securing areas north of Basra.
