Edward Rowland Bassett was born in Sidcup, Kent in 1894. A Printer by trade, he enlisted with the RNVR on 14 September 1914 as an Ordinary Telegraphist with no. Z/262 and first saw service aboard MFA Zaria (Louise) transferring to the RND on 15 September 1915. He was promoted to Temporary Sub Lieutenant on 12 November 1915 and to Temporary Lieutenant on 11 March 1918.
On 16 February 1916 he was posted to Anson Battalion in the M.E.F. at Stavros for service in the Dardanelles. He boarded HMT "Minominnie" at Mudros on 1 June 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles on 7 June, six days later. In September 1916 he was posted to Hood Battalion with whom he attended a number of Signal School courses. Deployed to France he was Wounded in Action - GSW to the left ankle - on 21 August 1918 and repatriated to the UK. After several months of hospital treatment he was deemed Fit for Service on 4 December 1918 by which time hostilities had ceased. He was demobilised on 15 April 1919.
According to the 1939 Register he was a General Manager of a Newspaper, Printing and Publishing Company and an Army Officer on the Emergency Reserve living at Oak Lawn in Tonbridge, Kent. He passed away at The Haven in Church Road, Sevenoaks, Kent on 5 March 1974.
