William Cressy was born in St Pancras, London on 7 April 1890. A Motor Driver, he enlisted with the 3rd Hussars at Westminster on 2 September 1914 for service in WWI and was posted to France on 18 October 1915. He served on the Western Front until returning to England on 14 December 1917 whereafter he was discharged, Physically Unfit, on 8 May 1918.

His Character Certificate described him as being "Honest, sober, and reliable. Discharged as the result of being incapacitated on Active Service."

Cressy was reported to have been Wounded in Action (incident date 16 January 1918) suggesting that he was wounded in December 1917 which probably led to his incapacitation and return to England. He was awarded the Silver War Badge which number corresponds with the one included.

According to the 1939 Register he was a Saw Mill Labourer living at 54 Balfour Road, Ilford. He was living at 50 Rusper Road, Dagenham when he died on 9 September 1979.
