James William Tutton was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight on 9 June 1898. He joined the RN as a Boy in 1915 and was 16 at the Battle of Jutland when he was aboard HMS Fearless. He was later in the same destroyer when it collided with another ship and five men sleeping near him were killed. He also served aboard HMS Hood.
He was awarded his Long Service medal on 19 July 1931.
After retiring from the Navy on 8 June 1938 he joined HM Coastguard being posted to Lerwick in the Shetland Isles and, afterwards, to the Scilly Isles and North Devon before his final posting to Eastbourne.
He died in Eastbourne in March 1977 at the age of 78.
