Thomas William Irons was born in Hatton, Derbyshire in 1871 (some records say 1873/4). He was already a seasoned Army veteran by the time WWI broke out with the 1901 census recording him as a Staff Sergeant with the ASC, and had received his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1910 as a Conductor with the Army Service Corps.
Commissioned in August 1914 he was posted to Egypt on 30 August the following year (1915). He was Mentioned in Dispatches and awarded the MBE "for valuable services rendered in connection with military operations in Egypt" in the London Gazette of 1 January 1919.
According to the 1921 census he was a Captain in the Regular Forces and was staying with his son-in-law, Joseph Alfred Burrage, at 37 Cranmore Place, Muswell Hill, London.
He died in Henley-on-Thames on 2 February 1933.
